Free Films and Public Domain

There are various places and web sites where you can watch free movies online legally and completely safely. Those places, especially web sites, provide free movies, TV shows, short movies, animated films and documentaries. Depending on their size and budget, they can provide a very broad choice going from comedies and war movies to famous TV shows and dramas.

There exist a few organisms that control the way things work in the film industry especially.

In the United Kingdom for example, the UK film council has a specific role. They are a government backed agency which ensures that various aspects like the economic, cultural and educational aspects of the movies are properly represented in the United Kingdom and in other countries. Those government agencies exist in most countries where they help and protect films and their producers.

Most of the web sites providing online movies that are free to watch legally, work very closely with those agencies.

In some cases, those sites can offer free movies because those free films have fallen into the public domain category. Generally, films are protected by copyrights and patents for a certain period of time, to protect the work of the producers and people behind the film and also ensure that those people get something for their work in some way.

In the United Kingdom for example, the copyright term is the usual life of author of the movie plus an extra seventy years, which mean that it can take some time for a film to fall into public domain. After a certain period of time that can fluctuate depending on the country and what has been done, a film can fall into public domain. This means that the viewing of the film is not restricted anymore. In our case it means that any site can provide its user free access to view or download the film. Most sites work on streaming, which is the best way to work as the user does not need to wait for the film to be fully downloaded before they can watch it.

As those legitimate sites grow, other sites also offer to watch free online movies or to download them illegally. Those sites provide movies and TV shows without having a license or the agreement of the organism responsible for the films. Going for the legal sites ensure that the films you will watch are of good quality and also virus safe as some of the copied films provided illegally can sometimes include Trojans and viruses.
