Having goals and desires are so important. Knowing what you want gives you something to strive towards and can give your life meaning. Goals can also be an important beacon of hope in the low times, which we all go through at some time in our lives. Without goals your life has no structure and you are just wandering aimlessly. When you are drifting day to day you are effectively letting life happen to you, without taking an active part. It's important to have an end date in mind of when you would like to have achieved your goal by. It has been said before, that a goal without a deadline is just a fantasy or a dream. The end date you have in mind should be realistic. There's no point picking a random date out of the sky, it has to be feasible. You can be flexible and bring your goal completion date forward if you notice your progress towards your goal is going quicker than you anticipated. Or you can make the goal end date later if it is taking you more time than you expected. (It's important in this case that you don't use this as an excuse to procrastinate!) Now that you know your end date you can break it down into many smaller goals. Now you have a plan of attack and know what you have to do daily, weekly and monthly. Provided every day you do what is required you will easily reach your goal. This alone can give an increased feeling of self worth and self esteem. Every day you are moving closer and closer to your goal and this is a great feeling that you are achieving things every day. Write down what you need to do each day if this helps you. Crossing off your tasks as you go can be satisfying. To help give you momentum as you move towards your goal you can reward yourself at certain time intervals. For example if your goal is estimated to take you 6 months you can reward yourself after 2 months and then again after 4 months. It's important to celebrate during the journey as well at the end. When you make your journey towards your goals enjoyable you will have more motivation to complete your goal. You are not a failure if you decide you no longer want to complete your goal. There is no point completing it just to say you have completed something. Sometimes to be clear on what you do want, you have to try things you don't end up liking.
